Background

The flight of Vietnamese refugees began after the fall of Saigon in 1975. In spite of the dangers of unfriendly waters and piracy, tens of thousands took to the South China Sea, and by 1978 the exodus had grown to dramatic proportions. This group of 162 persons arrived on a small boat which sank a few meters from the shore. ; This image was originally shot in black and white and was colourized in 2021 by the Brazilian artist Marina Amaral based on historical research and creative interpretation. As of end January 2023, there are some 183,790 refugees and asylum-seekers registered with the UNHCR Malaysia. Globally, UNHCR estimates that global forced displacement has reached 103 million on mid-2022. At the same time, there are an estimated 3.5 million economic migrant workers in Malaysia, while the number of international students is around 170,000. Making Malaysia the largest migrant-receiving country in Southeast Asia.
